Propylaea of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (VSKhV)
2023

The art installation at the main entrance arch of Gorky Park, commemorating the centenary of VSKhV, represents a comprehensive work of art. It envelops the existing propylaea, lending them a constructivist appearance when viewed from the Krymskaya Embankment, while retaining their original appearance when seen from the park side.

The artistic concept carries various connotations within both British and global contexts, drawing inspiration from the spirit, materiality, and artistic qualities of the original VSKhV structures, as well as the works of Christo and Jean-Claude. The concept revolves around the contemplation of the very essence of time.

What do we observe? A reversible reconstruction/modernisation of the neoclassical building? An avant-garde reverie? Propylaea in the midst of their construction phase? Did this transpire just yesterday? Or the day before yesterday, perhaps? Does the day before yesterday follow tomorrow, or does tomorrow succeed yesterday? The answers to all these inquiries are respectfully entrusted to the interpretation of our valued viewers, users, residents of Moscow, and guests to our splendid city.

The art installation is being meticulously erected through the use of a self-standing scaffolding structure, gracefully grounded, onto which finely crafted wooden panels, hewn from pine, and adorned with traditional 1920s patterns, are fastidiously affixed. Additionally, banners of artisanal fabric, embellished with graphic compositions and the centennial branding, as well as flagpoles adorned with a spectrum of multicoloured flags, gracefully adorn the structure. For the comfort of our patrons, illuminations have been thoughtfully provided during the nocturnal hours, casting a gentle radiance from within the structure.
